Candle Care & Candle Hacks: Everything You Need to Know

To help you get the most out of your Skye Candle and enjoy a long-lasting, beautiful burn, follow these easy candle care tips and hacks:

        Candle Care Tips:

        Trim the Wick:

Always trim the wick to about 5mm (¼ inch) before every burn to avoid soot and ensure a clean, even flame.

This prevents the wick from becoming too long, which can cause smoking or uneven burning.

        First Burn Matters:

Allow the candle to melt across the entire surface on the first burn to avoid tunneling. This usually takes 2-3 hours.

This ensures an even burn and maximizes the candle's lifespan.

        Avoid Drafts:

Keep your candle away from open windows, fans, or air conditioners to prevent uneven burning, flickering, or soot.

Drafts can cause the flame to dance and burn the wax unevenly.

        Burn Time:

Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Let the wax cool before relighting it.

This helps preserve the fragrance and prevents the jar from overheating.

        Safety First:

Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface and never leave it unattended.

Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.

        Extinguishing the Candle:

Use a snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax to extinguish the flame, then straighten it again. Avoid blowing it out to prevent soot and wax splatter.

        Keep the Wax Clean:

Remove any wick trimmings, matches, or debris from the wax to ensure a clean burn.

        Candle Hacks:

        Maximize Fragrance Throw:

To enjoy the full scent of your candle, burn it in a smaller, enclosed space like a bathroom or bedroom. Larger rooms may require multiple candles for a stronger scent.

        Avoid Tunneling:

If your candle tunnels (where the wax around the wick doesn’t melt), wrap aluminum foil around the top of the candle, leaving an opening for the flame. This will help the wax melt evenly.

        Reuse the Jar:

Once the candle has burned out, clean out the jar with warm, soapy water and repurpose it as a container for makeup brushes, pens, or small plants.

        Remove Wax Easily:

To remove any leftover wax from your candle jar, freeze the jar for a few hours. The wax will shrink and pop out easily.

You can also pour hot water into the jar to melt the remaining wax, then let it cool to remove it.

        Enhance Scent Throw Without Burning:

On warmer days, place your candle near a sunny window without lighting it. The heat will soften the wax and release the fragrance.

        Store Your Candle Properly:

To maintain the fragrance, store your candles in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight. This prevents discoloration and preserves the scent.

        Recycle Your Wax:

If you have leftover wax that won’t burn, melt it down and pour it into wax warmer or make small wax melts for continued use.

Fix a Candle That Won’t Light:

If the wick gets buried under the wax, pour out a little melted wax or use a paper towel to absorb it before relighting.

By following these simple care tips and hacks, you’ll ensure your Skye Candle burns longer, smells amazing, and stays safe!

How to Recycle Your Skye Candle Jar: Step-by-Step Guide

Our candle jars are designed to be fully reusable and recyclable, so when your candle has finished burning, follow these steps to give your jar a second life!

        Step-by-Step Recycling Process:

Boil Water & Add Detergent: Pour some boiling water into the jar and add a small amount of dishwashing powder or detergent. This helps break down any leftover wax stuck to the sides and bottom.

Let It Cool: Allow the jar to cool down. As the water cools, the wax will melt and float to the top, forming a solid layer as it hardens.

Remove the Wax: Once cooled, gently lift the hardened wax off the surface. You can reuse this wax by adding it to a wax warmer or discard it in the trash.

Remove the Wick & Wick Holder: Carefully remove the remaining wick and the wick holder (the small metal piece at the bottom). If it’s stuck, you can pry it off with a butter knife.

Final Wash & Scrub: Give the jar a thorough wash with warm, soapy water to remove any residual wax or detergent. Use a soft sponge to scrub off any stubborn spots, ensuring the jar is clean and ready for reuse.

Let It Dry: Once cleaned, let the jar air dry completely before repurposing it.

        Ways to Repurpose Your Jar:

Storage for Small Items: These beautifully designed jars are perfect for keeping small belongings like jewelry, earrings, buttons, beads, or office supplies like paper clips and rubber bands.

Home Decor: Use your jar as a mini vase for fresh or dried flowers, or fill it with pebbles, sand, or seashells to create a decorative accent.

DIY Planter: Turn your candle jar into a planter for small succulents or herbs. The compact size is perfect for window sills and desktops, adding a touch of greener to your space.

Kitchen Organizer: These jars can also be used to store spices, tea bags, sugar, or other kitchen essentials. Just be sure to label them for easy identification!

Bathroom Essential Holder: Use the jar to organize cotton swabs, cotton pads, or even makeup brushes, adding a touch of elegance to your bathroom counter.

        Recycling Your Jar:

If you don’t plan to reuse the jar, simply place it in your weekly recycling bin. Our glass jars are 100% recyclable, and the metal wick holders can also be recycled in most curbside programs.

By recycling or repurposing your Skye Candle jar, you’re helping reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable planet. It's a small step that makes a big difference! 🌍

What Are the Burning Times for the Scented Soy Candles?

With proper care, each scented soy candle has a burn time of up to 50 hours for the glass jars and up to 18 hours for tin.

Do You Sell Soy Candles in Sample Sizes?

Yes, we offer soy candle samples in standard tea light sizes. This is perfect if you want to test a scent or see the quality of our products before purchasing a full size.

Where Are These Scented Soy Candles Made?

All Skye Candle and Body Care products are homemade and handcrafted in Wellington, New Zealand.

What Type of Wax Do You Use in Your Candles?

We use 100% natural soy wax, which is plant-based, non carcinogenic, and non-toxic. Soy wax candles burn 50% longer than paraffin wax candles and produce little to no soot, making them gentle for those with breathing issues and allergies.

What Wicks Do You Use in Your Soy Candles?

We use ECO wicks, made from natural flat cotton threads interwoven with paper threads. ECO wicks are lead and zinc free, ensuring a consistent flame and even burn.

Are Your Candles Paraben & Phthalate Free?

Yes, our soy candles are GMO free, contain no paraffin or unnatural additives, and are biodegradable, renewable, and environmentally safe.

Why Do Soy Candles Start to Change Colour?

Soy candles can change colour over time, appearing dry or flaky if not burned for a while. This is because soy wax is a natural product. When relit, the surface will return to normal.

What Kind of Fragrances Do You Use in Your Scented Soy Candles?

We use both synthetic fragrances and essential oil blends that are phthalate and paraffin free, non-toxic, and made from premium quality ingredients. Soy wax holds aromas well and releases fragrance oils slowly due to its low melting point.

What Is Candle Tunnelling, and How Do I Fix It?

Candle tunnelling occurs when a candle burns straight down the middle instead of reaching the edges. To avoid it, ensure the first burn lasts at least 2 hours or until the wax pool reaches the edges. To fix tunnelling, scoop out the built up wax with a spoon and relight the candle, allowing it to burn to the edges.

Can I Recycle My Jar After My Soy Candle Is Finished?

Yes, once the candle is finished, peel off the stickers, pour boiling water with dishwashing powder or detergent into the jar, let it cool, and remove the remaining wax and wick. Wash and dry the jar for reuse or dispose of it in the recycling bin
